Total Disappointment
Only when the true crisis comes that you start seeing people taking off their masks~
Few days back we got expertise for chemical disposal from a company. As most of the chemicals had been around for few decades, the company we'd engaged needed to come down to check what these chemicals are before disposing them. Amongst the many bottles of chemical that we'd moved out from the store, they actually found a tin of chemical that apparently has no actually naming on the label, except the radioactive/ fan sign. Upon seeing this tin of chemical, the chemist we'd engaged told us that they're not authorised to dispose this for us, thus recommending us to a national body. Thus, I gave them a call, telling them to come over to our site for assistance in disposal.
Today, the meeting with the officer is firmed on tomorrow morning. As such, I had to give him an email so as to get his particulars for clearance purposes. As I told my boss this, he'd reminded me to keep the safety team in the loop.
It was the worst decision to have kept the safety team in the loop. Soon after I'd emailed them, the first reply I got from them was why they were not informed of the radioactive chemical. Then people after people start coming into my office, wanting to FIND OUT MORE. Everybody starts pushing blame here and there, including the SENIOR people UP there. And then the backward action to this is that go and find out this, go and find out that, go and ask this, go and ask that. Bla bla bla....
At the end of the day, my question was, was it of any use informing the safety team? Eventually, it will be good if they can take care of the 'problem', the 'problem' in THEIR eyes but not in mine.
Firstly, is it a problem getting govt body to come in and teach us on how to go about disposing something that we totally have no idea of the disposal procedure?? Besides, I cannot see how the team can handle this as eventually, they still need the govt body's assistance in the disposal.
Secondly, what if the safety team decided that they're not going to handle this issue, since every now and then people FACE 'problem' and RUN AWAY from it?? Is it then appropriate to leave the tin of stuff, hanging around for another few more MONTHS before someone suggest anything to dispose them?? It's tagged RADIOACTIVE, mind you. Not anything else that can WAIT and SEE first. So the fastest we get assistance on this issue, the better we can be protected from the potential hazard.
At the end of the day, the only fault that lies on me is that I probably should have kept the safety team informed, see their reaction before contacting the govt body. Other than that, my decision to go to the body is not a 'problem' at all. After much people coming in, out and people WORRYING that the company will be faulted for storing this tin of chemical, I'd decided to ring up the officer, who's coming in tomorrow morning, to find out what's the implication.
All I could comment on the officer, was that he is a very reasonable man. VERY MUCH MORE REASONABLE than the PEOPLE UP THERE. He'd assured me that no fault will be given to the company as we'd reported the case up front, and not hiding or trying to get rid of the chemical illegally. After talking to him for a while, I suddenly realised the true meaning of people saying people KIA SI.
I guess from today onwards, I only have my mentor and myself respected. All others UP THERE, sorry, you guys are a disappointment. And I think the "visions" and "mottos" can all be thrown into the bin since they're not being practised. Only a waste of money and time printing all those things, with these leaders around.
